The Ottawa SkyHawks will return for a second season, but where they’ll play is up in the air.

After shifting two late-season games from Canadian Tire Centre to CÉGEP de l’Outaouais and playing host to a post-season play-in contest at La Cité Collégiale, the National Basketball League of Canada franchise has its sights on TD Place arena at Lansdowne Park.

League governors have reduced the regular season to 32 games from 40, meaning 16 home dates rather than the 20 the SkyHawks had in their first season.

Attendance peaked at between 2,000-3,000 a game, which looked smaller than that even after the third tier of Canadian Tire Centre seats was closed off by curtains.

The hard lesson learned was that the Kanata arena was too far from the city’s core. Also, rent and ticket surcharges were also significant considerations.

A renovated and more central TD Place arena, with a capacity of 10,000, would seem to be a more appropriate location for an NBL Canada team.

The arena is part of the Lansdowne Park redevelopment governed by an agreement between the city and Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group, and the latter’s stable of sports franchises includes the Ontario Hockey League’s Ottawa 67’s, who will return to what was previously called the Civic Centre after two seasons at Canadian Tire Centre. The OHL’s regular-season schedule is usually announced in June.
