New canal bridge gets $2M kickstart

City council on Wednesday voted to spend $2 million for design work on a new bridge over the Rideau Canal.

The total cost for the pedestrian bridge between Clegg Ave. and Fifth Ave. is $17.5 million, but council only approved money for the design in the 2013 budget. The bridge is seen as a key piece of transportation infrastructure for the Lansdowne Park redevelopment.

Six councillors voted against the design expense: Orléans Coun. Bob Monette, Innes Coun. Rainer Bloess, Barrhaven Coun. Jan Harder, Osgoode Coun. Doug Thompson and Cumberland Coun. Stephen Blais.
